Peacetime Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Blair, Nebraska, he served as a Seaman in the US Navy. On July 21, 1905, the U.S.S. Bennington was in the Port of San Diego California, when one of the ship's boilers exploded. Seaman Schmidt ran to the deck and helped rescue wounded and later he went into the blast-wrecked boiler room and pulled out injured men. For his actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on January 5, 1906. After his discharge from the Navy, he was the a mail carrier in Norfolk, Nebraska, (1922-48). He died on February 9, 1963, at age 78 in Blair, Nebraska and was also a veteran of the Spanish Amercian War.
