Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was an 18 years old resident of Raynham, Massachusetts when he enlisted in Dedham, Massachusetts on August 22, 1861. Mustered in as a Private in Company H, 18th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, he would go on to be awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the2nd Battle of Weldon Railroad, Virginia on August 21, 1864. His citation (which erroneously lists his Company as "Company A") reads simply "Capture of battle flag of 27th South Carolina (C.S.A.) and the color bearer". His Medal was awarded to him on September 6, 1864, less than a month after his deed. On October 21, 1864 he transferred to Company A, 32nd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry after the enlistments of the 18th Massachusetts has expired in September 1864 (Private Anderson had re-enlisted previous to that). He served through the end of the conflict, and was honorably mustered out on June 29, 1865, having served in the field for nearly four years.
