U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1847, attended the Law School of Harvard University in 1848, was admitted to the bar in 1849 and commenced to practice law in Eutaw, Alabama. He was editor of the Eutaw Democrat in 1850, a member of the Alabama State House of Representatives, (1857-58) and a trustee of the University of Alabama, (1858-59). At the advent of the Civil War, he was a member of the Alabama State secession convention in 1861 and served as a Colonel of the 36th Regiment, Alabama Infantry, Confederate Army and was wounded twice in battle. After the war, he resumed the practice of law and was a member of the Alabama State House of Representatives, (1876-77). In 1879, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-sixth, Forty-seventh and Forty-eighth Congresses, serving until his death.
