US Congressman. He fought in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, joining up at the age of 15 and serving in Company E, S6th Georgia Cavalry from 1863 until the end of the war. He served as a Georgia superior court judge before being elected to the Georgia State Senate and the Georgia House of Representatives. He was then elected to represent Georgia's 7th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1892 to 1905. In 1907, he was elected mayor of the city of Rome, Georgia.
