U.S. Congressman. He attended Unadilla Academy, Walton Academy New York and taught school several years. During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company C, 43rd Regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry, Union Army, was wounded which necessitated the amputation of his right arm and was discharged in December 1862. He then entered the University of Michigan, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1875 and commenced to practice law in Ludington, Michigan. He was prosecuting Attorney of Mason County, (1876, 78, 84) and a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives, (1882, 92). In 1895, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth Congress and to next the five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1907. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and was appointed a member of the Spanish Treaty Claims Commission, serving (1907-10). Moving to California, in 1910, he engaged in fruit growing until his death at age 77.
