John Rock was born in 1920 in Omaha, Nebraska, the eldest son of John A. Rock jr. and Esther Chenoweth. He lived most of his life in Kansas City, Kansas and grew up in its Armourdale district, graduating from Argentine High School in 1940.

He briefly served in the United States Marines during World War 2, but did not see combat, receiving a medical discharge.

He married Patricia Model in 1943 and had four children with her; they divorced in 1967. He worked for the Kansas City Terminal Railway as a redcap at Kansas City's Union Station for close to 25 years. A lifelong smoker, he died of cancer in 1974 at the age of 53.
