HANOVER, Ill. -- Paul F. Crandall, 81, of Hanover, passed away Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011, at the Elizabeth Nursing Home. Paul had struggled with lung cancer for the past three years.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, at the Hanover United Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover, where military rites will be accorded by the Hanover Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5300. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Hanover.

He was born on Feb. 23, 1929, in Wadena, Iowa, son of Luther and Naomi Crandall.

He graduated from the Wadena High School and attended Upper Iowa University, Fayette, Iowa, for a year.

Paul then enlisted (01SEP1948) in the Marines and served for four years. He received a Purple Heart for wounds received while serving in Korea.(He was shot in the right jaw losing all but three upper teeth)

He married Annella Jones on June 6, 1954, in New Cambria, Mo. They lived in Volga, Wadena and Arlington, Iowa, moving to Hanover in 1976.

He worked as a meat-cutter and insurance salesman, and later became a banker. He spent many years in the banking business in Iowa and then Illinois. He was the CEO of the Hanover State Bank for 18 years until he retired in 1991. He then worked at Eagle Ridge Golf Course as a ranger which he loved.

Paul was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and the Presbyterian Church in both Wadena and Hanover.

Paul played ball through his school years and even after that for several years. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed bowling, golf, playing cards, especially euchre, and visiting with people. He raised and raced quarter horses on their farm in Iowa before moving to Illinois. Paul was a staunch Cubs, Bears and Iowa Hawkeyes fan.

Surviving are his devoted wife, Annella; two sons, Randy and Steven, both of Hanover; a daughter, Karla (Steve) Waltner, of Chesapeake, Va.; and six grandchildren, Jonathan, Courtney and Chelsea Crandall, all of Hanover; and Kadance, Gage and Jacelyn Waltner, all of Chesapeake.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James; a sister, Margie; and a sister-in law, Vivian.

In lieu of flowers, memorials be given to the Hanover Food Bank.
