U.S. Congressman. After studying theology, he was ordained as a minister and started a congregation in Middletown, New Jersey. He served as pastor of a Middletown Baptist Church and also engaged in agricultural pursuits. In 1815, he was elected as a Republican to the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Congresses, serving until 1819. After his term, he resumed agricultural pursuits until his death at age 75.
