U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1809 and opened a law practice in Hackensack, New Jersey. He was the postmaster of Hackensack, New Jersey, (1805-06). In 1821, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventeenth Congress, reelected as a Jackson Republican to the Eighteenth Congress and reelected as a Jacksonian to the Nineteenth Congress, serving until 1827. After leaving Congress, he returned to his law firm and practiced law until his death at age 59.
