U.S. Congressman, Massachusetts Governor. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1818 and commenced to practice law in Lanesboro, Massachusetts. He was the register of deeds for Berkshire County, (1824-31), Lanesboro town clerk in 1824 and chairman of the board of commissioners of highways in 1826. In 1831, he was elected as a Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-second through the Twenty-fourth Congresses and as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth through Twenty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1853. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he moved to Pittsfield, Massachusetts, in 1843 and was elected as a Whig the 19th Governor of Massachusetts, serving (1844-51). After his term, he was the judge of the court of common pleas, (1853-58) and a member of a commission to adjust differences between the United States and New Granada. He died at age 65 from accidental gun shot wound.
