During the Civil War, the Clinton County Courthouse was burned by Confederate guerillas on or about January 25, 1865. In 1869, the Fiscal Court paid Ellison $200 for roofing the new courthouse and making its window, shutters and door shutters.
During the 1986 Sesquicentennial Celebration, the front cover of the Foothills Festival book was a beautiful pen and ink drawing of this first brick courthouse by artist Jack Amonett, commissioned by the Clinton County Historical Society. This structure was used until 1895, when it was replaced with a new, and larger, building.
