U.S. Senator. He attended the United States Military Academy West Point, (1823-26), moved to Alabama in 1826, studied law, was admitted to the bar and established a legal practice in Monticello, Alabama. He was judge of the circuit court, (1843-52) and an associate justice of the Alabama State Supreme Court, (1852-56). During the Civil War, he served as Adjutant General of Alabama. After the war, he was again judge of the circuit court in 1868. In 1871, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1877. Not a candidate for reelection, he lived in retirement until his death at age 69.
