U.S. Congressman. During the Civil War, he served in the Confederate Army. After the war, he graduated from the University of South Carolina at Columbia in 1867. While working as a school teacher, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1871 and commenced to practice law in Butler, Alabama, in 1872. He was a member of the Alabama State House of Representatives (1878-79) and State Solicitor for the first judicial circuit of Alabama (1880-92). In 1897, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-fifth Congress and to the next eight succeeding Congresses, serving until 1915. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1920 and practiced law until his death.
