Television Broadcast Journalist. He was best known for serving as anchorman with ABC News during the 1960s. Following service with the US Army Air Force during World War II, Young initiated his career in journalism with the position of news director at a television station in South Bend, Indiana. He joined ABC in 1963, and first came to national prominence as anchorman of the documentary series "ABC News Reports" (1963); he served as an international correspondent in London and was noted for his coverage of the Arab-Israeli Six Day War (1967). Young succeeded a youthful Peter Jennings as anchorman of "ABC World News" in October 1967, and during his tenure covered such historic events as the escalation of the Vietnam War, Lyndon Johnson's decision not to seek another term as president, and Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination in April 1968. In May 1968, Young was succeeded by Frank Reynolds and Howard K. Smith; he was reassigned to local New York TV news broadcasts, serving as anchorman and correspondent. Young's broadcasting career ended after he suffered serious head injuries from a fall at his home.
