Catherine Hutzel and Peter H. Zittle were married on 24 September 1833 in Washington County. The couple had five children who lived to maturity: Joseph (b. 1837), Otho (b. 1845), Edward T. (b. 1847), Jeanette Cathern (b. 1849), and Emma A. (b. 1852). The nearly 8-year gap between Joseph and Otho suggests additional children who died in infancy. The Zittle household in 1840 had two boys under age 5.
Catherine Zittle doubtless also worked in her husband's wagon stand (a kind of tavern that served the men and horses of freight wagons) along the National Road near Zittlestown.
