Son of George and Martha Hoomes Ball. He graduated from William and Mary College with a degree in law and was admitted to the Virginia Bar. Removed to Montgomery, Alabama and practiced law for many years.
He married Eliza Jane Pollard on September 28, 1835 in Spotsylvania, Virginia. Represented St John's Episcopal Church at the Diocesan Convention held in Montgomery in 1838 and was elected to St John's Episcopal Church vestry in 1839. He and Eliza had seven children with five of those children living into adulthood and marrying well.
