Mrs. Carey was a board member of the Brooklyn Bureau of Community Service and had been active with her husband in supporting St Vincent's Home for Boys. In 1962, she was installed in St Patrick's Cathedral by Pope John XXIII as a Lady of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre.
Mr and Mrs Carey had 14 children, including a daughter of Mrs Carey's first marriage to a Navy officer who was killed in the Pacific in 1945. Two sons, Peter and Hugh Jr, were killed in an auto accident on July 3, 1969. The other children survive.
