DIED, at his late residence, in Naples, NY on Sunday, August 28, 1881, Richard Crippen, aged 76 years, 5 months and 9 days. For several months as a community, Death had passed us by, but new again he has come and taken another of our old and esteemed citizens, and beloved husband and father. For more than 60 years Mr. Crippen has lived among us, and for more than 40 years on the farm where he died. He was born March 19, 1805, in Herkimer Co. NY, on the lands known as the Royal Grants, and in 1819 moved with his parents to this town, where he has resided ever since, except a very few years in the town of Cohocton. He was married January 25, 1831, to Miss Elsie Nichoson, of Cohocton, who for more than half a century, has shared his burdens and his joys, who has been a helpmate indeed, and who with her children, during this last long sickness, has devotedly cared for him whose loss they now mourn. Mr. Crippen was not a man of many words, being careful to think before speaking, and consequently among his neighbors and friends his judgment was honored. He was honest and industrious, and these qualities were rewarded by a comfortable maintenance and a happy home. For the last four years he has been a great sufferer, gradually failing, but going down to the river of death with the feeling that he was prepared for the crossing, having a hope in the precious blood of Christ, and satisfied that his work on earth was done, and that for him a mansion was prepared in the home of his Redeemer. There are left a wife, three children and grandchildren, who treasure his memory. He was buried on Tuesday, the funeral being held at the house, at 2 p. m., Rev. S. T. Dean, a former pastor, officiating, and from the text "So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom," he faithfully exhorted those present to prepare while there is opportunity, for the end which is so soon to come to us all. The remains were taken to Rose Ridge for interment.
