Charles V. Dauth, 1133 Walnut, who died at the advanced age of 84 years at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, was one of the oldest residents of this city. He was born at Kircheim, Bolanden, Rhein-pfalz, Bairn [Bayern?], Germany, and was married on Dec 11, 1838, to Adelaide Mellert. On March 7, 1854, his first wife died. He was married to Mary Bauer of Wurtenberg, Germany, who died on May 20, 1872. He was married a third time to Gertrude Mechnich, of Reinland-Pflaz, Germany, who survives.

Deceased came to America in 1828, first settling in Phila., afterwhich he removed to Reading in 184?. He engaged in the store business in the Heinzmann building with his father-in-law, John Mellert. Lately, they moved next door to Stevens' drug store, Penn above 7th. They carried a full line of stoves, etc., and conducted a tinsmith shop. In 1849, he took charge of the store himself and remained in business in various places on Penn until 1878, when he retired. He was one of the first organizers of building organizations in this city and was a life-long Democrat. He was the father of 25 children.

Those by the first wife are: John P., Lewis and Arnorld, all of this city; Mary, wife of Charles Dauth, Belmire, O., together with 5 children, 4 sons and 1 daughter who died in their infancy, and George W., who died several years ago. The children by the second wife were: Mrs. Maggie Bachman and Herman, of Reading; Mrs. Emma Hoover, of St. Louis, and Mrs. Caroline Snyder, of Watkins Glen, N.Y., surviving, and Sophia, Charles V., Caroline, William J., Amelia, and Charles V., deceased. The children by the third wife, all of whom survive, are Charles, Catharine, Anna, Sarah G., and Charles A. besides 24 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Deceased figured prominently in secret societies many years ago and was general organizer of several orders in Reading. He was a member of the Lutheran denomination and was wellknown throughout the city. He was wellpreserved for his age and quite active up to several months ago.
