Joseph Lemuel Brown, 74, of 207 First Street, Bentleyville, died in Washington Hospital at 10:10 p.m. Friday, December 30, 1955, after a brief illness. He was a prominent resident of Bentleyville and well-known in the district.
A son of the late George and Emma Watson Brown, he was born in Gastonville March 12, 1881. The family lived here, in High Street, for many years. The father's death occurred in the influenza epidemic during World War I.
For more than 45 years the deceased had resided in Bentleyville, where he operated a grocery store until his retirement a few years ago. He was a former director of the Bentleyville Borough School District and attended the Gospel Hall of Donora.
He and his wife, the former Margaret McCracken, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary November 12, 1965.
Surviving are his wife; two daughter; Ivanore, wife of Dunning H. Horn, Franklin Farms, Washington, and Thyra, wife of George Grant, Fisher Heights, Monongahela; one son, Joseph L. Jr., Bentleyville; six grandchildren; and one sister, Alice, wife of Charles M. Chessrown of Wilkinsburg.
Friends are being received at the Jones and Thompson Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street. Bentleyville. Funeral services will be held there Monday afternoon at two o'clock, with interment to take place in Beallsville Cemetery.
