Roman Catholic Bishop. He was ordained as a priest on November 1, 1850. He was appointed as the third Bishop of Dubuque on 1866. In 1893 the Dubuque Diocese was elevated to an Archdiocese. When that happened, he became the first Archbishop of Dubuque, and served as such for the next seven years until his death.
