Born October 3, 1937 in Fulton County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Chester and Isabelle Ray Bishop and the widow of James W. Swain who died February 19, 1999.
She was a 1955 graduate of Southern Fulton High School, Warfordsburg, Pa.
She had been employed as a cashier and in customer service for McKinley's Food Market, Dollar General and Harry's Food Market, all in Hancock, Md.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Hancock, Md. and served the community in numerous ways.
She is survived by four daughters, Pamela Smith and husband, Greg, of Big Cove Tannery, Pa., Starla Ward and husband, Jim, Jr. of Hagerstown, Md., Tina Thomas of Clear Spring, Md and Sherri Kratz and husband, Bill, of Hancock, Md.; one son, Dennis Swain of Hancock, Md.; two sisters, B. Geraldine Shives of Hancock, Md. and Velma Mann of Warfordsburg, Pa.; grandchildren, Beth Keidel and husband George of Falling Waters, W.Va., Deidre Swain and fiancé Allen Omps of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., Anthony Smith and fianceé Amanda Weller, Brad and Megan Smith of Mercersburg, Pa., Keith Ward of Hagerstown, Md., Jason Ward of Knoxville, Tenn., Rebecca Shoemaker and husband Chris of Hancock, Md., Zita Thomas of New York City, N.Y., Meladie Thomas and fiancé Nick Gadoury, Logan Houser of Clear Spring, Md., Bryan Kratz of Hancock, Md.; great grandchildren, Kolen and Aubri Smith of Chambersburg, Pa., Owen and Charlotte Gadoury of Hancock, Md.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Lloyd C. Bishop, Sr. and one grandson, Thomas Kratz.
A service was held Saturday, February 5, at 2 p.m. at Grace Christian Fellowship, Rev. Edward Guyer officiated. Burial was in the Piney Plains United Methodist Cemetery, Little Orleans, Md.
The family requests that memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Avenue, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
