Virginia is my great-grandmother. She was born in Black Lake, Michigan, and reared on a farm in Brunswick, Michigan in Newaygo County. She was the daughter of Peter DeMars and Martha Monette, who immigrated to Michigan from Canada.

On May 18, 1896, she married Mose Coutchie (actually the name was Couture, but for some reason he went by Coutchie), and they farmed in the nearby Sheridan/Reeman area.

They had 9 children: Ila, Valoura, Della (died at age 13 during an emergency appendectomy), Sidney, Mae, Eugene, Moses (who died at 1 month of age), Napoleon, and Dorothy.
