US Congressman. He attended the local Georgia schools and then the University of Georgia and the University of South Carolina. A student of law, he was admitted to the bar in 1857 and set up a practice in Savannah, Georgia. During the Civil War he served in the Confederate States Army as a first lieutenant of the Phoenix Riflemen and was promoted up to lieutenant colonel in the Sixty-third Georgia Regiment. After the war he entered politics and was a delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1865; delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1872; and a member of the State senate from 1874 to 1877. On the national level he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-seventh US Congress in 1880. He failed in his bid for renomination to the Forty-eighth Congress.
