On June 12, 1856, she married Horatio Washington Bruce at "Helm Place", the bride's home in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.

She was the daughter of two-time Kentucky Governor John L. Helm.

The couple had six children: Lucinda Hardin Bruce, Helm Bruce, Elizabeth Barbour Bruce, Preston Pope Bruce, Mary (Bruce) Smith, and V. Alexander Bruce.
