Southern Cheyenne Indian Chief. He served as chief of the Southern Cheyenne Nation from 1889 until his death in 1917. Oklahoma's Roman Nose State Park, which opened in 1937, was the location of his camp grounds and is named for him. As a result of his participation as a warrior in continuous raids on white settlers, he was captured and sent to St. Augustine, Florida in 1878 by the United States Government. He then was educated and trained over the following six years at the Hampton Institute in Virginia and the Carlisle Institute in Pennsylvania before being allowed to return home in 1881. Eight years later, he was appointed Chief and is remembered for his efforts in guiding his people from their nomadic tradition following the buffalo to a more stationary lifestyle. He worked to preserve as much as possible of the Cheyenne heritage.
