At 43 years of age, Mason was named as the Third Apostolic Vicar of Bahr el-Ghazal by Pope Pius XII, receiving his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Rusicade on June 29, 1947, from Patriarch Carlo Agostini of Venice, assisted by Archbishop Giacinto Giovanni Ambrosi OFM. Cap., and Bishop Vittorio De Zanche.
On May 10, 1960, Bishop Mason was appointed as the First Apostolic Vicar of El Obeid by Pope John XXIII. He resigned from office at 65 years of age and was succeeded by Msgr. Paulino Lukudu Loro MCCI.,
Bishop Mason passed away on March 15, 1989, aged 85, and was interred in his native Limena. His autobiography, "La Mia Vita per il Sudan", was published posthumously.
