Author. He was a 20th century Japanese author. Born in Tokyo, Japan, he was graduated from the Tokyo Imperial University where he had translated modern French poets in to Japanese and submitted the translations to the literary journal, "Roba." He spent most of his adult life battling tuberculosis, which is believed to have influenced the melancholy atmosphere of his writing. His most famous novel, 'Kaze tachinu' ('The Wind Awakes, 1936) focused upon the life of Jiro Horikoshi, who designed airplanes. Other works included 'Sei Kazoku' (The Holy Family, 1932); 'Utsukushii Mura' (Beautiful Village (1933); 'Kagerou no Nikki' (Diary of Mayfly, 1937); and 'Younen Jidai' (Childhood, 1942). He succumbed to tuberculosis at the age of 48. The Hori Tatsuo Memorial Museum was established in Karuizawa, Nagano prefecture where he lived during his final illness. In 2013, an animated feature, 'The Wind Rises,' inspired by his novel, was released.
