Helen C. (Kelley) Stafford born Sept 3 1917 the d/o Herbert T and Madeline (Babbitt) Kelley and was from Bellows Falls when she met her future husband at Middlebury College. She graduated as a theater arts major in 1938.

Wife of Robert Stafford, who were married for 68 years (marrying on Oct 15, 1938. They raised four daughters, including twins, who still live in Vermont, Barbara Stafford in Colchester and Dinah Stafford in Rutland. Two older daughters live in New York state, Lynn Glase near Ithaca and Sue Mohr outside Albany.


A memorial service is scheduled for the Congregational Church in Rutland, tentatively on March 12, 2011. Finalized arrangement will be after meeting with the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

RUTLAND - Helen Kelley Stafford, 93, died Feb. 26, 2011 at her home in Rutland surrounded by her family.

She was born Sept. 3, 1917 in Bellows Falls, the daughter of Herbert Thomas Kelley and Madeline Babbitt Kelley.

After graduation from Bellows Falls High School, she completed a BA at Middlebury College in 1938.

In the fall of 1938 she married Robert T. Stafford of Rutland, a fellow Middlebury graduate. Helen and Robert resided in Rutland until moving to Washington, DC in 1960. Helen was busy raising four daughters, supporting her husband's political career and participating in hobbies such as boating, camping, skiing, arts and crafts. She was also involved in community activities including Rutland Hospital Auxiliary, Red Cross volunteer work, and she was a board member of Green Mountain College. Following Robert's retirement in 1989 from a life devoted to public service including Vermont Governor, US Representative, and US Senator, the couple moved back to Rutland.

She was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Robert T. Stafford in 2006.

She also was predeceased by one sister, Katharine Hunt; and three brothers, Harold, Lawrence and Allan Kelley.

She is survived by four daughters, Madelyn Glase (Jon), Susan Mohr (Robert), Barbara Stafford (Mark Anderson), and Dianne Stafford (Glendon Ingalls). Also surviving are five grandchildren, Robert Glase, Nicholas Glase, Jesse Mohr, Katherine Branon and Helana Kunkel. Helen had one great-grandchild, Madelyn Glase; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at 1 p.m. at the Grace Congregational Church in Rutland.

Following the ceremony, the family will receive friends at the church for a time of fellowship and refreshments.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.
