Illinois Governor. He was attending Wabash College, when his education was interrupted with the outbreak of World War I and he serving as Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After the war, he studied at Stanford in 1919, earned a law degree from the University of Chicago in 1922 and established a successful legal career in Chicago, Illinois. He was a special attorney with the Bureau of Internal Revenue, in 1926, a special assistant to the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, in 1927 and served as Illinois U.S. Attorney, (1932-35). In 1940, he was elected as a Republican the 30th Governor of Illinois, serving two terms until 1949. During his tenure, the Chicago transit system was obtained, the publicly owned port authority was sanctioned, veteran programs that focused on rehabilitation, reemployment and retraining were all advanced. Also, an interracial commission was authorized to look into racism complaints in the employment and housing sectors. After leaving office, he returned to private life until his death at age 61.
