Death: Aug. 28, 1914

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He entered his Civil War service with a commission of 1st Lieutenant in Company F, 11th Illinois Volunteer Infantry on May 2, 1861, and served three months before being honorably mustered out on July 30, 1861. On that day, though, the 11th Illinois re-enlisted for a three year term of serve, and he was re-commissioned as Captain of Company F. However, he would not serve with the regiment, being tabbed by brigade commander Colonel William H.L. Wallace to served on his staff as acting Assistant Adjutant General. He remained with Wallace when he was promoted to Brigadier General, and after Wallace was mortally wounded at the April 1862 Battle of Shiloh, Captain Hotchkiss accompanied his remains back to Illinois. When he returned to duty he was assigned to the staff of Major General John A. McClernand, and saw action at the Battle of Corinth. In the summer of 1862 he was assigned to help recruit a new infantry regiment, and was commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel of the 89th Illinois Volunteer Infantry on August 25, 1862. Promoted to Colonel and commander on January 7, 1863, he led the unit through many of the battles of the Army of the Tennessee, including the Battles of Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Atlanta, and Nashville. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war", and was honorably mustered out on June 10, 865. He became a prominent hotel proprietor in Chicago, Illinois after the war. (bio by: Russ)
