Bettie married Walter R. Abbot on 29 March 1860. Their only child, Walter Jr., was born on 7 June 1861. After Walter's death in battle on 30 June 1862, Bettie and Walter Jr. lived with her mother. She eventually received $90 in Walter's back pay, and in 1888 was given a widow's pension of $30 per year.

Walter Jr. died in 1865. Bettie never remarried, but was active in social and church matters in Richmond until her death, which occurred on the 47th anniversary of her husband's death. She is buried near her husband and son in the Mrs. N. R. Archer/Mrs. M. R. Turpin/Mrs. N. R. Dorman plot.
