Cartoonist. At an early age he became interested in drawing and his cartoons appeared in many Cuban political magazines during the 1950s. In 1960, just before Fidel Castro seized control of the country, Prohias fled the country to avoid arrest. Arriving in America, he began making the rounds to the local magazines showing his work. He dropped off a short cartoon at the offices of MAD Magazine, which featured a pair of odd looking spies. Impressed by this odd concept, MAD ran the cartoon "Spy vs Spy" in the January, 1961, issue. The MAD "Spy vs Spy" series from then on was a popular main stay not only in the magazine, plus also as an animated form on "MAD TV" and in a Sunday comic strips. Prohias continued to draw the strip for MAD until he retired due to poor health in 1990. He died of cancer at age 77.
