Son of Samuel & Elizabeth (Edwards) Hughes. Immigrated with his family to Pennsylvania about 1838. As a young man began working on river boats out of Pittsburgh and found his way to New Orleans. In 1861 he was drafted into the Confederate Army and served until the end of the war as a private in Fenner's Battery, Louisiana Artillery. He married Isabella Burrows (born Torrible) in Montgomery in 1865. After the war he was successful as a baker, chandler, steam boat owner and also in insurance business in New Orleans.
