Singer. Born Teng Li Yun, she was regarded as "Asia's eternal queen of pop." She was best known for her hit songs including "The Moon Represents My Heart," "Goodbye My Love," and "Sweet as Honey." Born in Yang Village, Baozhong Town, Yunlin County, she was the only daughter in the family. She attended Ginling Girls High School. In 1964, she participated in a singing competition hosted by the Broadcasting Corporation of China, and won with the song "Visiting Yingtai." In 1967, she joined Yeu Jow Records and released her first album titled " Feng Yang Hua Gu." In 1968, she had a record contract after performing at a music program. She then went on to tour in several countries, including the Phillipines, Indonesia, and Malaysia. In 1973, she joined Polydor Records in Japan. In 1974, she released her first Japanese single titled "No Matter Tonight or Tomorrow." In the 1980s, her songs were banned in China for several years due to political tensions. However, she remained popular in mainland China due to its black market. In 1983, she released another album titled "Dandan youqing." In that same year, she returned to the Japanese market. In 1984, she won "Singer of the Year" from the Japan Cable Award for her song "Tsugunai." She would go on to win this award for three years in a row. Following the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, she performed in support of the student protesters. In 1995, she died from an asthma attack while on vacation in Thailand.
