Hannah was born in Treherbert, Glamorgan, Wales

Hannah Mathias came to Lafayette, Colorado, U.S.A. in 1907 from Wales with her family of three boys and four girls. (Her husband James, had arrived two years earlier). After arriving the family lived with a friend and then a tenthouse for several years on East Oak St. Hannah passed away in 1920 leaving eight children.



Mrs. Mathias Dies At Home Saturday

Death Follows a Week's Illness; Funeral Services Held Tuesday

Last Saturday morning, February 7, at 3:30 o'clock at her house in this city, occurred the death of Mrs. Hannah Mathias. She was taken ill the sunday evening previous with an attack of the influenza. It was thought that she was on the road to recovery when the disease attacked her heart and caused her death.

Hannah Davis was born in Treberbert, Wales, August 17, 1875. In 1893 she was united in Tylerstown, Wales to Henry Mathias. In 1899 Mr. Mathias came to America and located in Belleville, Ill., and came to Lafayette in 1908. The following year Mrs. Mathias and seven children came to Lafayette, which has since been their home. The youngest son, Thomas was born in this place.

To Mr. and Mrs. Mathias were born eight children, all of whom survive. There are four daughters and four sons- Mrs. Bessie Evans of this city, Mrs. Margaret Richert of Niwot, Misses Gladys and Beatrice, Henry, Joseph, William and Thomas, all of Lafayette. She is also survived by three brothers and one sister, all of whom reside in Wales.

In early life, Mrs. Mathias became a member of the Welsh Baptist church and lived as near to the teachings of her religion as she possibly could. She was a devoted mother and her great joy in life was the comfort and care of her children. her loss will indeed be a sad one to those she leaves motherless.

Funeral services were held at the residence last Tuesday afternoon, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Lafayette cemetery.
