U.S. Congressman, Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He graduated from Yale University in 1937, engaged in the food business and served as a Captain in the Armored Field Artillery, U.S. Army, during World War II. After the war, he was a beef cattle feeding operator, later entered politics and was elected as a Republican to the Eighty-eighth Congress reelected to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving (1963-71). In 1971, he was appointed Secretary of the Interior in the cabinet of President Richard Nixon, serving until 1975, and was also Secretary of Commerce (1975-76) under President Gerald R. Ford. After leaving the cabinet, he retired from politics and engaged in boat building until his death from cancer.
