He was a Detroit newspaperman, engaged in natural-gas pipeline construction, a wholesale dealer in beef, pork products, plus was the organizer and trustee of Colorado Springs Labor College. In 1933, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-third Congress and to the next eleven succeeding Congresses, serving until his death at age 61. His son John David Dingell Jr. was elected to Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of his father, John D. Dingell, Sr. and held his seat for 58 years.
