Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was successful lawyer and former Wisconsin State Senator at the start of the Civil War, when he enlisted and was commissioned a Captain in the 4th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry in April 1861. In 1862, he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel in command of the newly formed 21st Wisconsin Regiment. He commanded the 21st Wisconsin in actions in Mississippi, Kentucky, Tennessee and was captured at Chickamauga and taken to Libby prison in Richmond, Virginia. There, with other Union prisoners, he was in charge of digging a tunnel to obtain their freedom. On the night of February 9, 1864, in a brave escape through the tunnel, Hobart and fifty-six others managed to reach the Federal lines and safety. He returned to the Army, was promoted Colonel, serving in the Atlanta campaign and with General Sherman's march through the Carolinas. He mustered out of the Army in July, 1865 and for distinguished service was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers.
