Homer A. Smith, 79, born May 7, 1917 in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, died January 2, 1997 in Oklahoma City. A long time resident of Oklahoma City, he served as the first judge of the Children's Court of Oklahoma County from 1957 to 1970. He attended Classen High School and graduated from Kemper Military School in Boonville, Missouri in 1935. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and became a practicing lawyer in Oklahoma City in 1946 with his father, Gomer Smith and brother, Gomer Smith, Jr. He was best known for his leadership on behalf of the children of Oklahoma County in innumerable civic and legislative activities beyond his appointed duties, including work for the passage of legislation for the protection of children and the activation of Big Brothers of Oklahoma County, which he served as president for five years. He was recognized by numerous organizations through the years, including the PTA, which awarded him its highest recognition, and his fellow district judges who, upon the petitions of hundreds of residents of Oklahoma County, caused his portrait and a plaque recognizing his distinguished service to juvenile justice to be placed in the Oklahoma County Juvenile Center. A lifelong member of All Souls Episcopal Church, he continued his good works throughout his life, touching the lives of people of every station. He was dearly loved and will be sorely missed
