North Dakota Governor, U.S. Senator. Educated at the Bruflat Academy, he graduated from Luther College Iowa, in 1913, taught school, in Bruflat, North Dakota and run the family farm operations. He was a member of the North Dakota State Senate, (1927-35, 40-51). In 1951, he was elected as a Republican the 24th Governor of North Dakota, serving until 1957. While he was in office, the Legislature established the Garrison Diversion Conservancy District, the state highway department and education issues were addressed. In 1959, he was appointed as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of William Langer, serving until 1960. Not a candidate for election, he resumed agricultural pursuits until his retirement in 1968.
