William James Thompson was the husband of Martha "Mattie" J. Rose. He was the son of Edward and Margaret Thompson who were early Morgan County pioneers. He was their first child born in what would become the State of Alabama in the year following his birth. James was a minister of the Gospel and pastored Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and Spring Hill Baptist Church, both near Trinity Station. Records show that he was also, an elder in these churches. James was the father of five children: Mary Thompson Grissom; Anna Thompson Baker, Jackson "Jack" Rose Thompson; Lavina "Lillie" Thompson Parker; and William "Willie" James Thompson. He is buried in an unmarked grave between his brother, John A. Thompson and his father, Edward.
