U.S. Presidential Cabinet Secretary. Moving with his family to Michigan, as a child, he grew up Detroit and graduated from the University of Michigan Law School, was admitted to the bar 1867 and had a very successful law practice. He frequently argued cases before the Supreme Court and established himself in politics by 1872. He was a member of Michigan Democrat Committee, (1880-85) and was a strong supporter of Grover Cleveland. After the election of Cleveland as President, he accepted the appointment as United States Postmaster General, serving (1888-89). After Cleveland's first term in office, he returned to the practice of law until his death at age 71. Dickinson County, Michigan is named after him.
