John Christian Smith was born on June 29, 1843 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. He was the second child, and eldest son, of Heinrich "Henry" Schmidt/Smith and Maria Catherine "Mary" Gernand. Both German born immigrants.

He was baptized on August 6, 1843 at St. John’s Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. His name on his baptismal record is "Christian".

He has 4 siblings (in order of birth): Louisa (Smith) Schlaubach, Henry Smith, Louis W. Smith, and William Belz Miller. His youngest sibling was born to his mother and step-father William Mueller/Miller. (See mother and siblings for more info)

It is unknown when exactly John came to Washington County from Cincinnati. He is seen on the 1850 and 1860 Census living in Union Township. On the Censuses following those he was living in Harmar.

He married Christiana Remmele, daughter of Albercht "Albert" Christian and Catharina "Catherine" Remmele, on December 25, 1871 in Washington County, Ohio.

Together they had 7 children: Mary Catherine, Albert Henry, John Christian, Henry William, Edward Adam, Laura Elizabeth and Frank Charles.

John worked as a Tanner for a number of years. When he was younger he worked in a Rolling Mill.

He passed away on March 15, 1919 at his residence in Marietta. His cause of death was "Organic Disease of the Heart". He was buried at Oak Grove Cemetery.

At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, two daughters, five sons and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, two brothers and a half-brother.
