Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Enlisted as a Private in Company D, 13th Michigan Volunteer Infantry on February 1, 1862. Promoted to Corporal on August 31, 1862, and to Sergeant on April 1, 1863. He was wounded and taken prisoner at the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia on September 20, 1863. He was confined in the Confederate prisons of Richmond, Danville and Andersonville, and escaped on September 10, 1864 at Macon, Georgia. Following his escape and during the period of his attempt to return to Union lines he observed the movement of General Hood's forces crossing the Chattahoochee River to flank Sherman's Army in the rear. He boldly walked through the Confederate marching columns, camps and pickets, reached Union lines near Atlanta on October 1, and reported his information to General Kirkpatrick. He was awarded the CMOH for this deed on July 31, 1899.
