Dr. J.W. Simons was highly regarded by men and women in the medical profession as a dedicated man who lived by the oath he took when he became a physician. As one well known local surgeon said, "Dr. Simons was one of a vanishing breed of medical men, who dedicated his life to mending and easing the pains of his fellowmen."

Dr. Simons joined Texas Gulf in February, 1928. After retirement he continued his practice at the Newgulf hospital until it was closed on August 31, 1972. After the closing of the Newgulf hospital, Dr. Simons joined the staff of the Rugeley and Blassingame Clinic where he worked until his death.
