Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. An 1850 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he was a Captain in the 5th United States Regular Infantry when the Civil War began. He was soon tabbed to be a part of Major General Don Carlos Buell's staff as an Acting Assistant Inspector General. He would serve the rest of the conflict in staff positions, being the Assistant Inspector General for first the I Army Corps, then the V Army Corps of the Army of the Potomac with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, US Volunteers. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on April 1, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services at the Battle of Five Forks, Va". He remained in the Regular Army after the war, retiring in 1879 as a Major.
