Mary Wallace was the daughter of the Independence Examiner publisher, William Southern Jr. and his wife Emma Proctor. She married Bess Truman's brother, George P. Wallace. She and her husband lived in one of the two houses next door to the Victorian style Truman home, that was built by Bess Truman's grandfather, George P. Gates. George Gates gave land next to his home, to both of Bess' brothers for their homes. Mary attended the January 1945 inauguration of Harry S. Truman as Vice President of the United States, and was a frequent guest at the White House after Truman became President of the United States. Mary's husband George was the person that heard the shot, and went into the room to find that Bess Truman's father (David Willock Wallace) had shot himself in 1903 (suicide).
