Scientist. Born in Luliang, China, he was a pioneer in the research of vitro fertilization and a co-developer of the oral birth control pill. In 1951, Dr. Chang began studying synthetic progestins' effects on reproduction which led to the development of an oral contraceptive in 1959. By the 1960s, the Federal agency licensed the compounds as a contraceptive pill and Dr. Chang is also credited with fundamental research that made possible the vitro fertilization in humans. Before retiring in 1982, he wrote over 350 scientific journals, plus was a member of the American Physiology Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the British Society for the Study of Fertility and the New York Academy of Sciences. He was also the recipient of the Lasker Foundation Award, Ortho Award, International Embryo Transfer Society Pioneer Award and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences.
