He then served as United States Minister to Egypt, where he assisted both Egyptian and British military and civil administrations in dealing with the defenses against the attacking German Army Afrika Corps. He later served as United States Ambassador to Greece and as political advisor to the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force. A confirmed bachelor, he is also remembered for politically protecting those within the government who were suspected of homosexuality.
